Gene McMath

Gene McMath, born into a musical family, found his childhood filled with his father’s charismatic strumming of the guitar and the soulful voice of his mother. Hence, Gene was destined for a life filled with melodies and beats. Gene's musical journey began at the age of 13 when he picked up his first guitar, inspired by the tunes that resonated within the walls of his childhood home.

However, fate had a different plan for him. Gene's passion for rhythm led him to the drums, becoming a percussionist in his earlier bands. His talent on the drums quickly became his defining feature. People knew him as a drummer, but in a surprising turn of events, Gene recently stepped into the limelight, taking on the roles of lead singer and guitarist in Against The Wind. Embracing his newfound roles, Gene discovered the power of his voice and the depth of his ability as a front man. His journey from behind the drum set to the front of the stage was marked by a determination to explore new horizons and challenge his own artistic boundaries.

In 1976, Gene found inspiration in the iconic Peter Criss from KISS, a drummer whose passion and energy left an indelible mark on Gene's musical soul. Three years later, in 1979, Gene's world was rocked once again when he encountered the sounds of Bob Seger's "Stranger in Town" through a friend’s 8-track tape. The raw emotion and storytelling in Seger's music struck a chord with Gene, leaving him in awe of the power of song.

From the guitar tunes of his youth to the rhythmic beats that defined his early years, and now as the lead singer and guitarist of Against the Wind, Gene continues to shape his musical career. With every beat of the drum, strum of the guitar, and note of his voice, Gene paints a portrait of Bob Seger and an unwavering love of music.
